WINNIPEG, CANADA - When Kirk Smith started his own royalty-free stock music site at OakStockMusic.com, he originally intended to sell his own compositions for creative types to use in films, tv, ads and presentations. Adding a link inviting other composers to submit their work was almost an afterthought.

That’s why he was so surprised when the music started flowing in from all over the world, including Brazil, France, the U.K., U.S.A., and Italy, to name a few. The submissions also included some from established composers for TV and film: Toronto-based composer Alex Khaskin (www.alexkhaskin.com) has credits as a composer on over 130 television episodes.

“I was just blown away by the response,” said Smith. “It shows the power of the web that you can put up a website and attract top notch talent from all over the world.”

Stock music websites are a response to growing demand from creative professionals who need scores or soundtracks to their work but don’t want to pay thousands, or tens of thousands of dollars for the rights to a hit song. Over the last few years the need has only grown as technology makes professional-grade audio and video production cheaper and easier. At the same time, the music industry and artists have been working harder to protect their work from piracy and to crack down on unlicensed use.

“If you’re making something for commercial use, you can’t just throw in a song from iTunes,” said Smith. “Stock music gives filmmakers, photographers, web developers or ad agencies access to professional quality music that’s affordable and, from a licensing point of view, hassle-free.”

Smith, a Winnipeg-based musician and entrepreneur, originally  launched OakStockMusic.com in 2006 alongside his production company OakStreamMusic.com to provide a creative outlet for his music. The site has a growing library, adding 10 - 20 new clips every week, in genres ranging from classical to hard rock, latin, jazz and more. Smith has also produced a number of Winnipeg bands whose music receive regular radio play.
